Traffic Safety

Along with the thousands of students, faculty and staff who attend Montclair State University, the numbers of pedestrians and vehicles on campus is nearly doubled on a daily basis by the many visitors who come to our campus to attend business, sporting, cultural and educational events.

The Montclair State University Police Department strictly enforces all motor vehicle, traffic and parking laws of the State of New Jersey. This is done to increase the safety of pedestrians and decrease the number of motor vehicle accidents.  Speeding, driving while intoxicated, failure to yield to pedestrians, driving on sidewalks, driving while on cell phones, failure to use seat belts and blocking fire/ emergency lanes are several of many violations that place members of the Montclair State community in danger, not only as pedestrians but as drivers as well. Motorists must always have a valid driver’s license, a current vehicle registration card and proof of valid insurance for the vehicle they are driving at all times in their possession. Community members are encouraged to report areas of concern to the University Safety Committee (via the area below on this page) for community solutions or directly to University Police if there is imminent danger to community members.

To avoid traffic congestion at Montclair State, allow yourself plenty of time for your commute, especially during morning, mid-afternoon and early evening hours. These times are when many classes commence or end and when the influx of traffic occurs on campus. Use common sense and extend courtesy to pedestrians and other motorists while you drive, and use public transportation when possible.‌

Authorized vehicles only are permitted in certain areas including most areas where academic and residential buildings are located. Please be aware of signs in the area and under no circumstances are any staff or faculty given permission to “allow” for driving in these areas. Persons wishing to drive in “Authorized Vehicles Only” areas must seek a permit from Transportation and Parking Services located in the Red Hawk Parking Deck lower level office.

SLOW DOWN!!!!!!

The speed limit on all University and adjacent roads is 25 miles per hour (m.p.h.)with the exception of College Avenue which is 15 m.p.h. The speed limit in parking lots and parking decks is 5 m.p.h. Speed is strictly enforced by radar.
